Bateke Mask - Large

This mask from the Congo's Teke people. Hand-carved of wood, this African Mask from the Congo's Teke tribe.

Members of the Kiduma, a secret club in charge of social events and ceremonies, wear these Bateke masks.

The mask is held in place by a biting bar at the back, which the wearer grips in his teeth.

These masks are typically ornamented with geometric symbols and separated by a horizontal stripe. They are colored with clay and paint.
