The 'Benin Bronzes,' a set of sculptures made of brass and bronze, comprise ornately decorated cast plaques, memorial heads, animal and human figures, royal regalia, and personal decorations.
They were developed by specialized guilds working for the royal court of the Oba (king) in Benin City from at least the 16th century onwards in the West African Kingdom of Benin.
The Kingdom also sponsored guilds that worked with other materials including ivory, leather, coral, and wood, and the name "Benin Bronzes" is often used to refer to ancient artifacts made from these materials.
